The aim of this article is to realize challenges of coast guard units in maintaining water borders security at Arvand River. Considering these challenges, a security role model could be designed to manage the water borders of this critical region in a more effective way so that an important step would be taken towards a steady security in the mentioned region. This research has an applied aim and methodologically speaking, it has a survey-descriptive method. To gather information, we have used library, documentary and field research methods. The statistical population of this article includes 14 posts of Abadan coast guard which equals 220 staff. The sample size is 140 persons according to H.S. Bola formula. The validity and reliability of the questionnaire was proved by studying references, taking tests, asking for experts’ views and using Cronbach's alpha which was 79%. Results show that the most important factors affecting Arvand River’s security are divided into two main parts: extra-structural and intra-structural. There are some effective suggestions to improve the existing circumstances such as: First, designing an educational model based on a field needs-assessment in order to enhance the knowledge of coast guard staff and second, strengthening border posts through offering equipment and well-trained interested border forces.
