Weather matters not only in relation to humans’ lives but also in military affairs. Weather is highly effective on the lives of plants, animals and humans and leads to changes in the physical and mental power of individuals. Even, with all the advances made by the civilization, it cannot dominate the weather conditions. Weather is such a factor which affects military plans, tactics and doctrines, command, selection of military forces, military equipment, clothing, logistics, repair and preserving, building and supporting. In this research, in order to evaluate the effects of climate factors on the activities of military forces in the western part of Iran, the standard effective temperature (SET) index has been applied. In order to do so, between existing synoptic stations in the region, 45 stations with high statistical age of 20 years (1985-2009) were selected. Then, the data concerning climate parameters such as, dry weather temperature, relative moisture, the speed of wind, cloudiness, and saturated steam pressure in daily and hourly periods were received from the meteorology organization. Mild climate conditions and hot and cold tensions in different days and months of the year have been zonated using SET index. The results were evaluated and then in the GIS environment of the research, it was shown that from May to October there are heat tensions with different pressures for military forces in Khuzestan, Western Ilam and Kermanshah. This is while there are good conditions for military forces in northern parts such as Azerbaijan and Kurdistan provinces in the same period of time. From the last days of October to April, there are cold tensions with different pressures for military forces in the northern half of the region (Azerbaijan and Kurdistan) and also in the heights of middle lands while in the same period of time, there can be seen rather good conditions in Khuzestan and Ilam provinces from the military point of view.
