Background and objective: currently, about 90 percent of world trade is carried via the sea ports and it identifies the vital importance of the ports. One of the main strategies in the development of ports is the characterization of spatial inequalities based on the level of development in of ports, and this issue has urged the planners in different areas to use different decision making models for the optimal planning in the ports. This paper aims at comparing and ranking the degree of development in the six commercial ports of Persian Gulf (Port of ShahidRajai, Lengeh, Bushehr, Imam Khomeini, Abadan and Khorramshahr).
Method: this study has been conducted in a descriptive-analytic method. The statistical population of the study includes the six important ports of Persian Gulf. The required data were obtained from the website of Ports and Shipping Organization of Iran. After the obtained matching, various data were included in the eight main and key indicators framework and then by using the ten-step algorithm, the TOPSIS model towards the ports ranking in terms of development level was performed.
Findings and results: the results indicated that based on eight main index PMO, of port facilities including jetties number, jetties capacity, number of land and naval equipment of public and private sectors, the number and area of the warehouses, the studied ports had high divisions and gaps in terms of the level of development, in a way that Bandar Imam Khomeini was identified as the most developed port and Bandar Abadan as the most disadvantaged port
