Background and objective: security is a necessity for a healthy community and the prosperity of a society depends on the security preservation and conservation of it. Therefore, considering the expansion of urban life and social insecurities in cities, especially border cities that is more sensitive due to their strategic locations, explaining the concept of security and effective criteria on it is necessary. This study aims to identify and rank the factors influencing citizens' sense of security in the border city, and to examine this issue in Torbat Jam city.
Method: in terms of its goal, the present study is of an applied research type and in terms of data collection it is survey study. The statistical population includes all of the 18-52-year old residents of Torbat Jam city in Khorasan Razavi Province (32451 individuals). Using Cochran sampling formula, the sample size 296 members were set for this city. The obtained data were analyzed using SPSS software. In order to prioritize the effective factors on sense of security, the Topsis decision making technique was employed.
Findings and results: the results showed that there is a significant relationship between sense of security and personal variables (including gender, education, and marital status), social capital, performance of media, law enforcement performance, individuals’ social base, and physical environment of the city. Among these, two variables of law enforcement performance and physical environment of the city are more important in border cities’ security and the variables of foreign media, in comparison with the other factors, had less impact on sense of security in Torbat Jam city.
