Background and objective: tourism is recognized as one of the fastest growing economic sectors and the largest service industry in terms of revenue in the world. Its development would lead to many social and economic changes. It is very important for the developing countries that are facing with problems such as high unemployment rate, limited financial resources and monoculture economy. One of the exiting potentials in local level in border areas of the country is the development capacities of touristic activities and the present study aims to investigate the effect of tourism promotion on border areas’ social development in Golestan Province.
Method: in terms of its goal, the present study is of an applied research type and in terms of data collection it is of a survey method. The statistical population includes the residents of Golestan Province border areas (unlimited number) among which 263 participants were selected from four stakeholder groups using Cochran formula. The data were collected via a researcher-made questionnaire, the validity of which was confirmed by the experts and its reliability was measured and endorsed using Cronbach alpha coefficient (.88). The data, then, were analyzed using SPSS software, chi-square test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient and t-student test.
Findings and results: the findings indicated that there is a direct and significant relationship between tourism development criteria of 1) social development, 2) promoting the quality of social services, and 3) promoting the life quality of local community, respectively. Also, the research independent variables estimate about 72 percent of the variation of border areas development variable.
